As a researcher and enthusiast of Open Innovation and all it’s related facets, I’m always interested in seeing how new companies or industries are taking to crowd-sourcing (harnessing the wisdom of the crowds).
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve come across a number of interesting movements in this paradigm…
In Politics:
This is not a new thing, Polish and Dutch political parties have used crowd-sourcing to engage crowds in anything from writing a manifesto to putting together policies… but now it’s spreading west with Obama’s Change.gov. This site is using Google Moderator to allow the public to submit and vote on ideas… here are some of the top ideas submitted. Remains to be seen of course if any of it will get dealt with…
In Broadcasting and Media:
The BBC is publicly testing an ideas forum using the IdeaTorrent platform, to encourage the public to submit and vote on ideas on how the BBC can better service their viewers and listeners.
In Music:
Several websites such as WeMix, BoJam and recently Minimum Noise have been developed with the sole purpose of getting a network of collaborative musicians together to write, perform, record and distribute music. It’s still hard to determine how successful any output of these projects is likely to be… but if the below collaborative movie venture is anything to go by, then why wouldn’t it work for music?
In Movies:
The first crowd-sourced-internet-created movie is about to be released… Perkins14 (trailer below) has been managed and controlled by fans from the outset (from idea, to casting… to editing). It was put together collaboratively based on the Massify platform.
Even Google:
… has just released a Product Ideas implementation of their Moderator app to encourage submissions around ideas on how Google can better implement any of their products.
I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to be a consumer or user…power is definitely back in the hands of the people, and my guess is that it’s just going to get better.
