Yahoo’s OneSearch is to power the Search platform on T-Mobile phones. It seems strange that in this particular period of Yahoo decline, that they are able to secure a Search deal such as this with T-Mobile. Especially considering Google’s recent deal with T-Mobile for the G1 Android phones (on which OneSearch will also be prevalent). Personally, I would’ve assumed it as a given that Google would’ve gotten that deal.
It’s clear that Yahoo is trying to secure a significant chunk of market share of Mobile search where the future-is-bright, especially after practically conceding that Google has won the desktop search battle. There is some speculation that Yahoo is paying a guaranteed amount to T-Mobile… similar to what Live Search (Microsoft) paid for their Verizon deal.
What’s quite ironic as well is that this is an exact role reversal to the situation in Japan… where Yahoo dominates in desktop search and Google is entering the backdoor via the Mobile web.
