This article in the NY Times looks like it is reason enough to own an iPhone (and presumably an Android powered phone – sooner or later)… a service that allows users to ask any question verbally, converts them into digital files (via speech/voice recognition software), sends the query to Google servers and comes back with a response…
Personally, I don’t think this is just a small step in technical evolution but a fairly large one… voice recognition is not new, and has been used by lots of automated call center systems… but this is the first instance that I know where it becomes mainstream and applies to every day issues. I’m assuming it’s limited to English at the moment, but still… imagine what it can do for the disabled or visually impaired who are looking for information to run their daily lives?
On a positive note, well done to Google for coming up with this… on a cynical note, I wonder how long it’ll take before they start pushing ads through this new channel!?
It should be ready at some point today (Monday) US time… if any of you download and use it… I’d welcome any feedback.
