I came across this very interesting clip of Eric Schmidt (Google CEO) speaking at the Bloomberg HQ in NYC on 20/10/08… posted by Google on 24/10/08…
Schmidt was invited to speak on the Future of Technology and delivers a great 30 min speech followed by 28 mins of Q&A. I have a lot of respect for this guy as a businessman and a techie… and I think even though it’s 58 mins, it’s worth watching/listening to.
Clearly having to cram all facets of the future of technology in 30 mins means that none of the hypotheses or subjects are covered in much depth… but I’ve highlighted some of the points he discusses…
- The future of connectivity… specifically broadband and mobile penetration…
- The increase of social networking… sharing..
- The advent and growth of Cloud Computing…
- The web facilitating translation… specifically with regards to the millions of books that have never been translated into English…
- Increase in the speed and responsiveness of the web… with special focus on written and visual news…
- The web changing social norms and impacting what is considered acceptable…
- How the internet and mobile technology would help connect what Google calls the ‘O3B’… which stands for the ‘Other 3 Billion’ people who do not have access to consume or share information.
- Solution to misinformation is more information, open-ness…and the internet truth police (general people who challenge spoon-fed information)…
- Power shifting from institutions to the individual… power and ubiquity of information…
And a small note worth mentioning…
- Schmidt refers to a bit of research Google conducted in which 11% of people surveyed would willingly implant a chip in their brains that would connect them to the internet…
Here’s the clip… enjoy!
