MS to buy RIM?

This article on BusinessWeek refers to speculation about Research In Motion (Canadian manufacturers of the infamous BlackBerry) being primed for a take-over… one of the possible acquirers discussed is Microsoft. BusinessWeek seems to dismiss the possibility, citing RIM’s probable rejection of the offer…

I’d imagine this would help Microsoft make some inroads into the smart phone market (to compete with the iPhone and tomorrow’s launch of TMobile’s Android phone). I don’t have much visibility into the implications and rammifications of trying to swallow such a company into the MS group… so can’t comment on that. If it did happen, I wonder what MS would do with Window’s Mobile which is still very prominent as the OS of choice for smart phones manufacturers (including the slick HTC series)… would it try to integrate both and re-package as a new OS?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this speculative idea?
