Audio playback was introduced to Knol pages, extending the medium of sharing your expertise beyond text and visual imagery.
Since inception Knol’s always been compared to Wikipedia and often been referred to as the ‘Wikipedia-killer’. That clearly has not happened yet, but it seems to have gathered some momentum in obtaining content… so it will propagate. I don’t really see them as direct competitors anyway, Wikipedia’s model is based on people adding comment anonymously and altruistically for the good of ‘everyone’… the intention is therefore skewed in favor of the readers. Knol is targetting people with a certain expertise, knowledge or experience to contribute to it’s pages… the intention in this case is skewed towards the writer/contributor and inevitably it won’t just reflect expertise and knowledge but also people’s personalities. I’m sure a few companies will be thinking about hijacking the system in search of some SEO exposure. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with Knol… and I believe it will actually help propel some careers into the limelight… I just think it’s a different beast to Wikipedia.
Either way, Wikipedia offers audio version of the articles… but I haven’t seen an audio plugin on their pages in the way Knol has introduced it. If any of you have seen one… I’d be grateful for the feedback.
