Nameo, the recent app developed by the guys behind the Next Web blog is pretty cool. It allows a seamless exchange of virtual contact or business cards (vCards) between iPhones with a very simple click of a green-button.
In terms of the way it functions it seems to work well, but is currently dependant on a couple of points:
- Both contacts having iPhones
- Both contacts to have downloaded and installed the Nameo app
It’s quite similar to a function available through the Palm V a while back… and a tool released by Tapulous recently that allowed to share info between iPhones through a shaking movement (meant to represent a handshake). What’s cool though is that it also saves the time and location of the vCard exchange (presented on Google Maps) just in case you can’t remember which conference or city it was you met ‘that guy’.
From Nameo’s website and the NextWeb post, it looks like it uses the internet and geo-location to identify who you’re exchanging with. It’s also being developed for some other smartphones. I’m assuming since it uses the internet it will work across all platforms whether Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry… since I don’t have an iPhone, I look forward to these other versions. Nevertheless, I don’t think it’ll be the business card killer…
One side note, it’s quite interesting how content publishers such as NextWeb and TechCrunch are beginning to dabble in monetizable software and hardware (Nameo and the TechCrunch tablet, respectively). Considering the subject matter they rigourously and continuously post on, it’s good to see them make use of their contacts and competitive intelligence. Well done guys.
