TechCrunch and SilliconAlley Insider are both reporting (here and here) that YouTube is about to launch homepage ads as a technique to generate some revenue and monetize, what in my view is the most popular web product on the internet.
A couple of interesting points..
- The claimed cost for a homepage ad is stated to be about $200,000 a day? that’s a pretty big chunk of a companies online marketing budget… especially at a time when advertisers are being ultra-cautious about spend.
- The concept of Background advertising came up in one of the comments… this is quite interesting, and I have to admit is the first time I hear of it. I suppose it makes complete sense as more and more user’s are using higher resolution settings on their browsers… it was only a matter of time before someone came up with the idea of using the wasted space on either side of the main page.
It seems this method would mostly be suited for brand awareness campaigns… and not for any direct marketing as ROI is probably not going to be very healthy – from this type of advertising. I just can’t see there being any call to action or clickable link/button on this area…
AdCamo is one of the first to provide this type of advertising… quite cool.
